This is the story (we hope it won’t turn out to be a saga) of an unlikely group of people who are going to cycle from London to Venice in July/August 2010 to raise money for the Royal Marsden Hospital. We are doing this in memory of Debora, a remarkable woman whom we all adored and who sadly died of cancer in January 2009.

Our goal is to raise enough money to establish the Debora Matthews Fellowship for research into palliative care. We can never say enough about how wonderful all the palliative care people at the Marsden were, (and everywhere else too) and how much they helped Debora in her final months. It made us realise what an unsung but essential part of healthcare this is, which is why we want to do something to help.

Husband Joe and stepson Frankie are intending to ride the whole way, with other friends and family joining us for different phases of the journey. Many others are helping with organisation, sponsorship etc. to whom we are hugely grateful.

This is the story of how we get on.

If you would prefer not donate via our Just Giving page www.justgiving.com/ridingfordebora but would still like to support the fellowship please contact me directly, and we can sort something out.

    It’s looking good, Joe.
Not too sure how many people are going to markup comments in xhtml, but thought I’d test it…
Looking forward to the route map.

    Dear Mr. Goodall,

we were so sorry to hear of your wife’s death after her long and courageous battle with cancer.
We are still thinking about the lovely time you spent in our house and are very happy to hear from you, even if the news you gave us are dolorous. The loss of a dear and near person is characterized by teariness, weakness and despair but we hugely appreciate the effort you put into the initiative to found research into care for cancer patients which nowadays is one of the best things to do as millions of people suffer from this severe disease.
With pleasure we would like to support you and we are more than happy to offer you our help. We would have loved to host you and your friends in our house during your cycle ride but unfortunately the apartments have already been reserved for our regular guest in August. However, you could stay in our holiday flat from the 21st of August until the 28th of Augusst or later on in September. If you cannot change your route we are happy to help you in another way. A suggestion from your part is welcome.

We are looking forward to hearing from you soon

    Sincerely

    Family Senoner
